About

Why Sqz exists.

Sqz is built by a single developer who got tired of the gap between Mac image tools and the modern format landscape.

The format gap

In 2014, ImageOptim was the answer for any Mac developer who wanted smaller images. Drop a folder in, watch the bytes drop. A decade later, ImageOptim still only compresses JPEG, PNG, GIF, and SVG.

The web moved on. AVIF, WebP, and JPEG XL ship in every modern browser and operating system. Mac users wanting to use them ended up with browser uploaders, abandoned freeware, or pricey subscription apps.

The maker

Anhphong Pham is an indie macOS and iOS developer based in Vietnam. He has built and shipped over twenty apps on the Mac and iOS App Stores, including SnapProof (GPS stamp camera) and Snapsift (AI photo cleaner).

Sqz is the result of building the encoder Anhphong wanted for his own workflow: drop a batch of JPEGs, convert to AVIF for web or JXL for archive, see the savings, move on.

What you can expect

  • One-person support: emails get answered within a business day, usually faster.
  • One-time pricing: $14.99 once, no subscription, refundable through Apple if Sqz is not for you.
  • Local-only processing: images never leave your Mac. Sqz has no network permission.
  • Steady updates: features and format support improve as the libraries do.
